Welcome to this selection of Monica’s digital photographic work
The common denominator is the energy of form, colour and light.
Revisiting some of the landscapes in Spain and Australia over a longer period of time resulted in documenting slow or sometimes rapid changes due to actions by man and/or climate. The impact of humans on their environments.
This is given extra attention in the theme Made by Man, where besides architecture and applied art, the ‘subservient’ landscape and fauna can be seen.
A result of sometimes long and sometimes short human activities which regularly have disastrous consequences for our ecosystem and societies

The thinking of the Mechanical Mind.
Monica changed to digital photography around 2003 when photography as a visual form underwent a veritable revolution. Digital images have become commonplace and today more images are produced in one year than in the entire 19th century. This massive volume is partly due to a reversal of thinking and doing. First press the button and then see if there is something to be done with ‘photo-shop’ or filters, versus the more common method in analogue photography, first think and then do. Of course, this had everything to do with the fact that film was more expensive and the entire development and printing process required a lot more time to make a photograph ready for viewing.
Monica grew up surrounded by large format panoramic photographs that were made by her father, Frits J. Rotgans, the well-known widescreen photographer and pioneer. From him she received her first training in image composition and photography. The image in the viewfinder should be basically the same image as develops on the negative plate. A compelling necessity when she went out with one of her father’s famous self-built cameras and a strictly limited amount of photographic film.
Monica’s photography has developed into a logical extension of her work as a painter and researcher.
